'Recoil' - Bejewelled Coyote Skull and Painted Reliquary Base

This skull has been adorned with completely hand fabricated sterling silver and .999 fine silver elements and semi-precious gemstones. This is a coyote skull, sourced from an unfortunate road casualty. It was pretty busted up, but I wanted to use the damage as part of the work. Where the cheek ridge had been broken and missing, I installed a hand-fabricated sterling silver spider with Baltic amber and black tourmaline creating its body. A red coral tongue, a fluorite crystal eye, and turquoise makes the snout. Hidden below the other cheek cavity is a chrysoprase surrounded by tiny silver maggots. Finally, hand woven sterling silver spiderwebs grace the ears. My name and the year have been tooled into silver of the bottom within an ornately stamped border.

This skull comes with a hand-painted reliquary base, complete with buttery-soft handmade leather tassels. The base has been painted with morel mushrooms, twisted snags, and scarab beetles, along with a twisted garter snake. The skull hangs via a large soldered silver ring mounted in the back.

The skull measures 8 inches long, 4 inches wide, 3.5 inches tall.
The base measures 10 inches long, 6 inches wide.
The entire piece including tassels measures 18 inches long.

This work has been signed on the back and comes wired and ready to hang vertically, or display horizontally.

'Recoil' is the companion to my other skull, 'Unfurl.'
These skulls were created around the theme of Growth and Decay for two subsequent exhibits at both Paradigm Gallery in Philadelphia, PA, and Antler Gallery in Portland, OR.
It is part of a diptych, the companion piece can be found here:
