Oblivion - Bejewelled Mink Skull Reliquary
One could get lost in the iridescence of an opal just as easily as one could get lost in the woods.
It is just so easy to lose ones way...
Have you ever gone astray on purpose?
Oblivion is an ode to the feeling of immersing oneself fully in nature. The calm of having not one single sign of civilization in sight.
Like a mischievous apparition, the smiling mink skull beckons you deep into the forest dark.
This piece was made using a genuine ethically sourced mink skull, adorned with sterling silver, ears made of leaves and hand stamped details all over.
The eyes have been set with two flashy labradorites, and 2 colorful Ethiopian Welo opals. The nose also has a labradorite, and the mouth contains a little rolling pink coral tongue.
The skull has been secured with an anchored free-link in the back, allowing the piece to become wearable if desired.
The jaw is fixed and does not move. The bottom of the piece has been hallmarked with my signature, the year, and .925 to indicate metal purity.
The skull rests on a reliquary base has been handmade from wood, leather, clay, and brass and features and original deep woods landscape painting framed by a hand-sculpted twig wreath.
The scene is a dense thicketed area of the Tillamook forest, in Tillamook, Oregon.
Entire piece measures approximately 15 inches tall, by 8 inches wide, 5-6 inches deep.
The skull measures approximately 4 inches long and 3 inches at the widest point.
The back of the base is signed and dated and comes ready to hang.
As with all handmade and one-of-a-kind jewelry, utmost care should be taken to keep jewelry clean and dry. Never wear your pieces while bathing, swimming, or washing dishes to avoid having them submerged in water. Bones and stones are porous and susceptible to become weak when they get wet. Metals can tarnish and lose their patinas more quickly if they get wet or washed with chemicals frequently. Also, please remove your pieces before any strenuous activities as they are fragile and parts could be knocked loose or fall out. Treat your jewelry like the unique piece of art that it is and it will remain in good condition for ages.
To clean, use a clean damp cloth to wipe the surfaces free from dirt r dust. To shine, carefully use a polishing cloth or a piece of felt to hand buff the surface using care not to tug the feathers. Never use a silver dip or bath on this work or you will destroy the patina.
